Spatial Planning and Sustainability in Yunnan Province, China

The China Planning Team has recently won a landmark commission in Yunnan Province to provide technical assistance to the Yunnan Development and Reform Commission in the areas of spatial planning, sustainable development and geographical information systems. The technical assistance is part of a wider effort coordinated by the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department for International Development and the Department of Communities and Local Government. The findings of the technical assistance will be presented to the World Urban Forum in Nanjing in 2008.

China's 11th 5 Year Plan stipulates that all provinces should develop a spatial plan. Eight provinces out of thirty-three have been selected to pioneer this process, of which Yunnan is one.

Yunnan Province lies in south-west China and has a population of some 45 million persons comprising over 4% of the total land area of China. The spatial plan will focus on strategic issues of development, infrastructure provision, natural resources and environmental protection.

The commission underscores Atkins' capabilities in strategic urban planning and sustainable development.

The technical assistance team comprises Mark Harrison, Chen Yi, Marc Robson, and Yi Xing.
