Tunnels & Ground Engineering
The Tunnels & Ground Engineering group of Atkins undertakes projects in the Greater China and South-East Asia region. We represent one of the strongest tunnel and related ground engineering design teams in the region and we both support, and are supported by specialists from 175 international offices within the Atkins group.
With a specialist tunnel team based in Hong Kong since 1973, Atkins can justifiably claim to be the SAR's leading designer of tunnels and associated underground structures, including shafts and caverns. An example of Atkins' capability is the innovative design of the KCRC West Rail Tsing Tsuen Tunnels which adopted advanced Earth Pressure Balance TBM methods to complete the drive through mixed ground conditions, a first for Hong Kong , achieving major savings.
Major projects in mainland China include the prestigious Xiamen Eastern Corridor Subsea Tunnel, which is the first subsea tunnel in mainland China , and technical advisory services of segmental lining design for Bejing Metro (11.6m internal diameter TBM Tunnel). In the region, Atkins has also been involved in numerous tunnel and ground engineering projects in Malaysia , Singapore , Taiwan and Thailand .
We provide services with respect to all aspects of underground works development throughout planning, design and construction stages.
We have successfully completed a wide variety of underground for rail, highway, metro, sewer, water and utilities providing design and construction services to government, private sector clients and contractors with respect to tunnels, shafts, deep excavations, deep foundations and other ground engineering works infrastructure.
