KCRC Contract No. DB320 West Rail Phase I ˇV Tsing Tsuen Tunnels
The 3.6km long Kwai Tsing Tunnels form a key component of the KCRC West Rail Project, which serve the Western New Territories of Hong Kong . Atkins led the design team commissioned by DZJV to undertake the successful tender and detailed design for all aspects of this project including geotechnical, tunnelling, architectural, structural civil, electrical and mechanical and system safety. The Tsing Tsuen Tunnel section comprised two 8.75m diameter TBM drives, each 1.8km long. The contract was awarded on the basis of an alternative design proposal using a mixed ground Earth Pressure Face Balance (EPB) machine. The use of a TBM was proposed at tender stage as an alternative to the conforming cut and cover and Drill and Blast option, and was the first use of a large scale EPB TBM in Hong Kong.

KCRC Contract No. DB320 West Rail Phase I ˇV Ha Kwai Chung Tunnels
A major element of DB320 Kwai Tsing Tunnels project was the 1.7km Ha Kwai Chung Tunnel which comprised a twin track, single bored tunnel. This 13m span tunnel was excavated using drill-and-blast techniques. For this tunnel, Atkins undertook the design of the tunnel alignment, portals, shafts, general arrangement, temporary support (rock bolt and shotcrete) and permanent tunnel support (cast insitu concrete lining). In addition assessments were undertaken of the impact of blasting on the adjacent sensitive receivers, including natural and man made slopes and existing structures. |

Gautrain Rapid Rail Link ˇV Design Package 3
The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link will provide an 80km link between Johannesburg and South Africa 's capital of Pretoria . Atkins is the lead designer for DP3, the southern 15.5km of the route, which is constructed completely in tunnels with cover of 20m to 80m. Atkins' Hong Kong office is responsible for the design of the 4.3km section of dual track tunnel (11m span) constructed by drill and blast from Mushroom Park to Marlboro Portal. Temporary and permanent tunnel support is provided by rock bolts and shotcrete, with limited lengths of insitu concrete. The Hong Kong office is also responsible for the design of two emergency access/egress shafts along the 5.7km section of single track tunnel between Park and Rosebank, and for the External Strategic Design Review of the single track tunnel support design. |

KCRC East Rail Extension Contract No. LDB201 ˇV Sheung Shui to Chau Tau Tunnels
Atkins was the Independent Checking Engineer (ICE) for the Dragages (HK) Joint Venture for the HK$2.8Billion Design and Construction of KCRC Contract LDB201 - Sheung Shui to Chau Tau Tunnels. This 4.3 km tunnelling project formed part of the KCRC Lok Ma Chau Spur Line which is required to relieve congestion of the Lo Wu Station boundary crossing between Hong Kong and Mainland China . The tunnel was constructed by a combination of cut-and-cover and Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) techniques. The tunnel option for this railway alignment was selected in order to minimise the impact on the environmentally sensitive area of Long Valley . The use of ground freezing in the construction of the emergency cross passages was one of the measures adopted to avoid any adverse environmental impacts. |

West Rail Tsuen Wan Section Approach Tunnels Hong Kong
As part of the West Rail DD300 design contract Atkins completed the detailed design and construction supervision of approach tunnels to Tsuen Wan West Station. These comprised approximately 600m of cut and cover, reinforced concrete tunnels which cross a congested area of reclaimed land. Due to the variable level of rockhead beneath the site and the high water table, different sections of the tunnels were designed as either founded on rock via diaphragm walls or ˇ§floatingˇ¨ where rockhead was too deep. Both ˇ§top downˇ¨ and ˇ§bottom upˇ¨ construction methods were employed. The results of Value Engineering studies contributed to substantial construction cost savings and reduced or eliminated many programme constraints on this complex project. |
