SYSTEM DESIGN ENGINEERING & MANAGEMENT

Taiwan High Speed Rail Trackwork ¡V Detailed Design
Atkins was appointed by one of two trackwork design & build contractors, Taiwan Track Partners JV, to undertake the detailed slab track design for the Northernmost TRUPO section of the Taiwan High Speed Rail project in Taiwan. This 160kph section provided one of the most complex parts of the track system, threading largely through old constrained conventional rail tunnels on the approaches to Taipei . Atkins was also appointed by both track contractors to undertake full Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) requirements for the entire 345km 350kph line.

MTRC Tseung Kwan O line Overhead Line ¡V Detailed Design
Atkins was appointed by the design & build contractor, BZCJV, to undertake detailed design of the 1500V d.c. Overhead Line System for the MTRC Tseung Kwan O Project. The 11km line also included design for depot OLE equipment at Tseung Kwan O South, and interfacing to the existing MTRC network at Kwun Tong. The design was undertaken in a number of stages which included development of general design concepts for the system; determination of interface design requirements; detailed sub-assembly; assembly and component design; allocation design; and construction support.

Jingjiu Line Speed Improvement ¡V Signalling Design
The China Railway Signalling and Communications Design Institute contracted Atkins to produce signalling design alterations for 36 stations on the Jing-Jiu line covering approximately 500 route km. The work involved application design for Cab signalling code system transmitters and receivers; replacement of 3 aspect line side signals with 4 aspect lineside signals; trackside cabling; design of relay and computer based interlocking cab signalling code generation interface; and upgrade of the signallers interface.

KCRC Light Rail ¡V Preliminary Systems Design
As part of a larger fully integrated civil and systems engineering design commission, Atkins was appointed by the owner/operator KCRC to undertake preliminary design, detailed design (civil works only) and resident engineering services during construction of a 4.4km extension to the KCRC Light Rail System in Hong Kong, and modification of four major road/rail junctions to achieve grade separation between the road and light rail system. Preliminary systems design and resident engineering was undertaken for the 750V d.c. power supply system; overhead line; alignment and permanent way; vehicle information system (signalling); various telecommunications systems including SCADA, CCTV, PA, PABX, Optical bearer, and radio; and Automatic Fare Collection systems.
