PASSENGER SIMULATION MODELLING

Hong Kong Hung Hom Mass Transportation Centre ¡V Station Planning and Passenger Modelling
The Hung Hom Mass Transportation Centre is one of the key interchange stations on the planned Shatin to Central Link (SCL). It was initially planned to facilitate interchange between two future lines and one existing line. The station would accommodate more than 130,000 passengers during peak hour and over one million passengers per day. Atkins used the LEGION pedestrian simulation model to assess the viability and safety of the proposed station design. The initial LEGION model results demonstrated that the design scheme failed to accommodate the forecast patronage numbers at desirable service levels. Subsequently, having undertaken a re-design process, the LEGION model was used to demonstrate that the desired service levels and operational requirements could be achieved with the revised design scheme. Thus it was demonstrated that the station capacity could be increased by 35% without increasing the station footprint. The LEGION model proved valuable in optimising the design in a systematic and robust manner and with the ability to critically assess costs and benefits of layout changes. In addition, an evacuation simulation model was developed that helped to demonstrate for various evacuation scenarios that each of the station areas could be cleared within specified times.

New Guangzhou Station Transport Review ¡V Station Planning and Passenger Modelling
Three LEGION models were built for the pedestrian study for New Guangzhou Station which is situated in the southern part of the Zhongcun Town . It is planned to serve as a regional railway hub for Wuhan , Zhuhai, Maoming, and Shenzhen and to provide a cross boundary terminus for travel between Hong Kong and Guangzhou . Passenger numbers are expected to reach 304,000 daily in year 2030. The LEGION models were primarily used to optimise the station design during normal peak hour operation and also to assess the adequacy of proposed security check facilities.

Shenzhen Laojie Station ¡V Passenger Modelling
The project involved the upgrading of the Shenzhen Laojie Station which will provide an interchange between existing Shenzhen Metro Line 1 and future Line 3. The station is expected to accommodate up to 40,000 passengers during the peak hour. LEGION models were built and validated to optimise the preliminary design for both normal operation and evacuation scenarios. Design validation was aided by the undertaking of various analyses including passenger density mapping and evacuation timing. These outputs were compared with the relevant metro design standards as a means of verifying the adequacy of the design.

Shanghai Shijiadadao Station Concourse Operation Review ¡V Passenger Modelling
The project was commissioned by the Shanghai Tunnel and Engineering Institute to analyse the station performance under normal operation, and to identify any potential congestion/ bottleneck areas to inform the design of mitigation measures in order to ensure smooth and safe station operation. LEGION was used to assess the performance of an initial concourse ticket gate arrangement and to subsequently test a range of improvement measures suggested by the initial modelling analyses. The simulation and analysis of the final layout demonstrated that the station capacity was sufficient to cater for future surge peak demand flows at reasonable service levels.

SDC 700 Admiralty and Central South Stations ¡VStation Sizing and Passenger Modelling
Atkins undertook the detailed design for both of these stations on KCRC's Shatin to Central Link in Hong Kong . Crucial to the design process was assessing the impact on the existing Admiralty MTR station of the proposed interchange with the new SCL station. A manual assessment was complemented by a Legion model of the entire station complex with which a range of operational scenarios were simulated including delayed train services, out-of-normal running and train on fire evacuations.

Beijing South Station Transport Review ¡V Station Planning, Sizing and Passenger Modelling
The scope of work for this transport review included a detailed review of internal pedestrian movements and pedestrian simulations for all three levels of the station. The station was developed as one of Beijing 's four main passenger railway stations, connecting with Shanghai and Tianjin , serving suburban services and connecting with metro lines 4 and 14. The forecasted daily patronage in year 2030 is 290,000ppd. The station operation was modelled using LEGION to determine the optimal and most efficient layout to serve the complex pattern of passenger movements. Six LEGION models were produced in total including both normal peak and evacuation scenarios.

Guangzhou Underground City ¡V Pedestrian Planning and Modelling
The proposed pedestrian network for the Guangzhou Underground City reflected the spatial allocation of activities that it supports and the linkage between these activity nodes and with the transport means to access Zhujiang New Town from external regions.

Our design benefited from the application of LEGION dynamic pedestrian simulation modelling to ensure that the pedestrian links are convenient and of sufficient capacity to make the pedestrian experience a comfortable and enjoyable one ¡V especially at the strategic interchange between the Mass Transit System and the Metro at Twin Towers Station during the 2020 peak hour.

Causeway Bay Underground Pedestrian Link and Station Improvement Study ¡V Pedestrian Planning, Station Sizing and Passenger Modelling
This design of an underground pedestrian retail link that interfaces with a metro station concourse and street level entrances required careful planning of circulation spaces and escape provisions. This planning was augmented by a Legion model of the combined station and pedestrian link that served to simulate both peak hour pedestrian activity as well as various emergency evacuation scenarios.

Dubai Metro Green Line - Station Sizing for Underground Section
Having successfully engineered the stations for Dubai Metro's Red Line, Atkins was commissioned to undertake the Initial assessment of all 6 underground stations on the Green Line with a view to adapting previously developed Red Line station designs for Green Line application. In addition, the impact of planning parameters changes on the current designs of two underground interchange stations at Burjuman and Union Square was evaluated.

Gautrain Rapid Rail Link ( South Africa ) ¡VSystem-wide Station Sizing
Atkins undertook the preliminary station sizing for every station on the proposed Gautrain Rapid Rail Link between Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa . This system wide assessment included platform sizing, escalator and stair provisions, ticketing facilities and entrance sizing and was conducted according to an agreed methodology that comprised selected best international practice guidelines from various design codes.
