RAILWAY DESIGN ENGINEERING
EXISTING RAILWAYS
UPGRADING OF EXISTING RAILWAY

Causeway Bay Underground Pedestrian Link and Station Improvement Scheme
This project involved the design of a new pedestrian link under Hennessy Road and Great George Street to provide improved grade separated accessibility across Hennessy Road and to the Causeway Bay MTR Station (CAB). Five new entrances in the street will be provided to the Underground Link and CAB station. In addition the East Concourse will be remodeled to improve circulation and to allow full integration with the Underground Link. Issues of constructability, fire engineering and minimizing impacts on the existing MTR facilities, pedestrians and traffic have been dealt with in the design. Retail has been incorporated into the design to provide an attractive environment to encourage use of the Link and also to provide financial support.

Admiralty to Pacific Place Subway
This subway links the basement shopping arcade at Pacific Place directly to the Admiralty MTR Station at concourse level. It is approximately 120m long with a clear subway width of 7.1m. Escalators have been provided for upward and downward pedestrian movements. To avoid traffic disturbance during construction, the section under Queensway was built as a driven tunnel. The rest of the subway was constructed by the cut and cover method. Atkins carried out the design and supervision of construction of this project.

Pedestrian Subway Entrance for Tai Koo MTR Station ¡V Entrance F
Atkins was lead consultant for the detailed design and supervision-in-chief of a 170m long pedestrian subway (Entrance F) connecting City Plaza Commercial Development with Tai Koo MTR Station. The works included two entrances and a 123m long, 5.2m diameter rock tunnel excavated below an anchored rock slope along King's Road and several residential housing blocks.

Provision of New Lifts (Contract No. C5006)
Atkins led this project which involved initially the design of new passenger lifts in 15 existing MTR Stations [9 external passenger lifts (EPL) and 15 internal passenger lifts (IPL)]. The project included the study of and selection of appropriate lift locations, generic and detailed design of lift supporting structures and enclosure, breakthrough of existing station structures, utilities diversion, traffic impact assessment and lift machine room design.
